5 April 2007: Sinclair Knight Merz Appointed as Project Consultants

Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM), one of Australia’s most reputable engineering and environmental consultancy firms, has been appointed to manage the approvals process for the construction sand project. SKM have a vast range of experience with the issues relating to this project, and will be responsible for conducting studies (other than traffic noise) and preparing applications for the development approval. Noise investigations will be undertaken by another consultancy.

21 March 2007:  Term “Waste Sand” replaced with “Tailings Sand”

CRL / QCM has received comments where people are concerned about the use of the term ‘waste’ to describe the sand.

The term was not intended to describe the sand as something that has no value (intrinsic, financial or otherwise), but rather to describe it as something that was ‘left over’ relative to the mining process. We consider that it is left over, because the sand that we propose to export is excess to that required to rebuild the dunes and is being stored above the original land surface. This project will see the two areas where tailings are being stored being returned to their original topography in the long term.

CRL / QCM regrets any offence this may have caused, and will now refer to the sand as tailings.
