Pre-mine Surveys
Long before we start any mining activity, CRL conducts extensive pre-mine survey and environmental monitoring programs and community consultation in co-operation with Queensland universities, government bodies and consultants.
Results of these surveys help CRL to plan our mining operations and ensure the company complies with rigorous state government environmental management regulations.
We carry out vegetation and fauna surveys to identify the species present in the area to be mined to ensure their appropriate management.
Surface and ground water levels as well as water quality are identified in and around the mine path to allow us to develop water management plans.
Data collected from our flora and invertebrate surveys can pinpoint the presence of rare, threatened or endangered wildlife and plant species in the mine area. Significant species which occur in the mine path must be re-established in the area after mining. Plant species which do not re-establish naturally are grown at our own plant nursery, Queensland’s first commercially accredited plant nursery, and planted by hand each year.

In addition, we use satellite imagery, aerial photography, ecological indicators and local knowledge to accurately develop complete vegetation profiles of our mine sites. This enables our environment officers to select the correct seed mixes and plant species for post mine rehabilitation.
At CRL, we also understand the significance of the island’s indigenous cultural heritage to the community. We work closely with the island’s Minjerribah Elders, the Quandamooka Land Council and specialist archaeological consultants to preserve significant artefacts and community areas for future generations.
