World Class Conservation

CRL is conducting world class ecosystem rehabilitation and fauna research into a number of rare and threatened species on the island.

The Glossy Black Cockatoo is a rare and secretive bird found in many forested areas on the island, including old mining rehabilitation. Research into this bird is helping us to develop a strategy for the management of Glossy Black Cockatoos in the greater Brisbane region.

Initial results from our Koala Monitoring Program confirm this creature’s island population is thriving and regularly inhabits our rehabilitated mine sites. This innovative, CRL-funded program is a collaboration between CRL, the Federal Government’s Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP) program and the University of Queensland.

Our rehabilitated Ibis mine lease is home to the Oxleyan Pygmy Perch. There are only 22 known locations in the world where sitings of this species have been recorded. In 2002, we successfully developed a Significant Species (Fish) Management Plan and breeding program.

In addition, we sponsor the University of Queensland’s Marine Research Facility and their research program of Moreton Bay’s dugongs and sea grass.
