About our mine site tours

Unimin’s Mine Tours are available for Tertiary Education and Special Interest Groups who are able to identify the benefits and relevance to the group of a Mine Site tour.

Due to operational and safety reasons Unimin no longer conducts Active Mine site tours for Secondary – Year 11 and 12 groups.

For Tertiary and Special Interest Groups

A minimum of one month’s notice is required when applying for a Mine Tour. Groups requiring input from Unimin’s specialist staff ( eg. Geologists, rehabilitation staff and engineers) must apply at  least two months prior to the requested date.

Note: Specialist staff are not always available but if appropriate notice is given we will endeavour to organize them for the tour.

Unimin  tours take groups to one of our active mine sites and provide an introduction to Unimin’s mineral sands mining and award winning rehabilitation processes.

Tours access a working mine site. For greatest benefit and safety to participants, groups are  limited to a maximum of 35 participants.

To cater for larger groups a number of tours may be scheduled during the day.

Tours generally require a minimum time period of 3 hours. Duration of the tour will vary depending on the individual requirements of the group.

The earliest booking start time is 8:30am and the latest booking time is 2pm. Note: there is some flexibility in regards to tour times.

Information required for the booking includes:

  • Preferred date & time
  • Tertiary study area (eg. Mining engineers, water engineer, Environment and Natural Resources)and student level (eg. First year, third year, post graduate)
  • Focus of the tour (ie. What you want to see/gain from the tour)
  • Why a Mine Tour is relevant to the group
  • Benefits to participants from a Mine Tour
  • Number of participants
  • Contact Name, Phone Number  and email address
  • Tertiary Institution -  Name, Address

Groups must provide their own transport to and on NSI. All vehicles entering mine lease areas must be fitted with seat belts for each passenger.

The tour is more effective if your bus is fitted with a working microphone. A video/DVD player on the bus is also an advantage.

Unimin has several safety procedures, which you must be aware of and comply with. These safety procedures will be listed on your confirmation letter if you chose to book a tour with Unimin - CRL. If your group does not meet these requirements, access to mine leases will be denied.
